The Rock That Watches Over Us—and Waits

Camping de la Tête d’Indien takes its name from a Mi’kmaq legend passed down through generations—a tale of love, loss, and enduring hope rooted in the landscape itself.

The Mi’kmaq are the original people of the Gaspé Peninsula, with deep spiritual and cultural ties to the land and sea. Storytelling holds an essential place in their traditions, used to explain natural landmarks, share wisdom, and keep ancestral memory alive.

According to this legend, many years ago, a tall ship carrying white men from Europe arrived near Île Plate, just off Pointe-Saint-Pierre. The crew came ashore to gather fresh water and forage wild berries, when they came upon a young Mi’kmaq princess, laughing and playing with children in the forest. Captivated by her presence, they took her by force and sailed away, leaving heartbreak behind.

The stone face in the cliff—watchful and solemn—is said to be that of her young lover. Grief-stricken and resolute, he turned his back on the sea, vowing not to look toward it again until it returned his beloved. He remains there still, carved by time and legend, a silent guardian of the coast.

To this day, the Indian Head Rock stands as a powerful symbol of the Mi’kmaq people’s connection to their land, and of the enduring strength of love, memory, and spirit.

A corner of paradise

By the sea

At Camping de la Tête d’Indien, our first mission is to offer guests a chance to recharge by the sea.
Our site is perfect for those seeking peace and quiet, meditation, a good book, or simply a deep breath of fresh ocean air. Here, the sea breeze carries the scent of salt and wildflowers, wrapping around you like a gentle embrace as it whispers through the trees and dances across the waves. Once you’re settled into our little corner of paradise, we’re willing to bet—you won’t want to leave!
